Auburn student assistant passes away before LSU game

After Saturday night’s 12-10 loss to LSU, Auburn coach Gene Chizik announced Auburn student assistant coach Joe Bagwell had passed away shortly before the game.

“I want to start out with a non-football related situation. It is a very heavy heart for myself and a lot of our players and a lot of our coaches right now. The young man, who was a student assistant (coach) with us, in football passed away shortly before the game unexpectedly, and it is very tragic,” Chizik said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.”

Bagwell, 23, of Huntsville, was in his first year as a student assistant coach after serving as a student trainer last season.

Details of his passing were not released by the Auburn athletic department due to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
