Career day for Arkansas DE Flowers in home state

Arkansas defensive end Trey Flowers had a career day against the Tigers, getting 3 1/2 sacks in the Razorbacks’ 24-7 win in Jordan-Hare on Saturday. Coming in Flowers had two sacks for his career but said he had extra motivation going against Auburn.

“I guess you could say I had a chip on my shoulder,” Flowers said. “Coming back here and knowing that Auburn didn’t give me a scholarship.”

Flowers, a 6-foot-4 243 pound sophomore, played for Columbia High School in Huntsville and said he was looking forward to playing well for the many family members he had in the stands.

“That’s what I’ve been thinking about all season,” Flowers said. “I said before the season, if you didn’t offer me you better not play me. So I went out there and made sure that they knew they missed and opportunity.”

Flowers brought the Tigers back 39 yards off of his sacks and also had two quarterback hurries. Defensive coordinator Paul Haynes said Flowers’ break out performance came as no surprise.

“He’s strong on the edge,” Haynes said. “He’s fast off the edge and we kept on saying, ‘just go speed rush off the edge.’ We started just letting those guys go and it worked.”
