Trovon Reed catches first career TD

Wide receiver Trovon Reed had his first career touchdown reception on a 40-yard pass from Jonathan Wallace in Saturday’s 42-7 Auburn victory over New Mexico State.

It was also a career-long reception for Reed, a sophomore, who wore No. 37 in place of his normal No. 1 in memory of Ladarious Phillips. Phillips was killed in a shooting at an Auburn apartment complex over the summer.

“It meant so much to me,” Reed said. “To have his jersey on for my first touchdown … that was the first time I ever put on a different number besides No. 1. It was all God. I’ve never worn any number but 1 — even since Little League.”

Reed said he may wear No. 37 for the remainder of the season. He made a nifty move en route to the end zone for his first career score.

“It was like a jerk play, one on one with the linebacker,” Reed said. “We took advantage of their linebacker. Jonathan Wallace made a great throw. I caught it. My receivers — they made great blocks downfield to open up for me.”
