VanGorder reminded defense of Texas A&M before New Mexico State

After letting up an Auburn worst 671 yards against Texas A&M, defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder said the performance was “embarassing.” His goal was to make sure the Tigers learned from their mistakes heading into their matchup against New Mexico State.

“The experience of that game,” VanGorder said. “I don’t think it can leave anybody this particular season but all we can do from that game is learn from it.”

And they did learn from it. The Tigers held New Mexico State to a season-best seven points and 305 total yards. Their previous bests were 12 points and 351 yards against LSU. On Friday VanGorder made the defense watch film of the Texas A&M game to emphasize the culture he hope to build at Auburn.

“This is one of the great places in the country to play football and to be where we are today, we all share a responsibilty in that,” VanGorder said. “To have a performance like we did last week, it so far from what this place represents.

“So my message is geared more toward Auburn, representing Auburn and its people in a way it deserves. And the question is are we worthy of Auburn right now? And that was kind of the message, not necessarily to relive Texas A&M.”
