Wallace’s play a moral victory in Tigers’ shutout

Despite Auburn getting blown out 38-0 by Georgia, freshman quarterback Jonathan Wallace had a solid debut in first SEC action. Wallace went 15-for-22 for 181 yards with an interception and added nine yards on the ground.

“There are some things that he did quite well and that’s a great defense we were playing,” offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler said. “Not a good defense, a great defense. He did some things against some very good players tonight that will make him grow. He pushed the pocked at times well. Jarvis Jones is a guy who’s a top-5 draft pick and at times stepped up around him and made a play. He’s just going to get better and better.”

In his first career start against New Mexico State last week, Wallace went 9-for-16 for 164 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He said after that game he knew Georgia would be a whole different test, and he was right.

“Its a lot faster,” Wallace said. “Its a lot of faster, a lot of bigger guys everywhere. But hey man, its Georgia. They’ve got a good football team. Its just one of those things where you’ve got to make plays when they present themselves. We had some, missed some and it got us beat.”

Wallace showed the most poise of any Auburn quarterback this year. Even though he was sacked three times, on multiple occasions he extended plays with his feet and kept the offense moving. He was off target on a few throws, his interception was a pass to Blake that sailed high, but overall coach Gene Chizik said the young quarterback had a solid day.

“I think Jonathan did some things tonight that were good,” Chizik said, “and I think Jonathan had some opportunities in there that were missed. A couple of times, he extended plays and made plays and there were a couple of times where there were some wide open receivers and he didn’t necessarily get the ball on target.”
