Chizik ‘disappointed’ but confident he can turn it around next year

Talking with reporters on Sunday, Auburn coach Gene Chizik was asked if he was confident he could turn the program around after a miserable 2012 season. The Tigers (2-8, 0-7 SEC) are in the midst of the worst season for the program in 60 years.

“That’s very accurate,” he said, adding a “top to bottom” evaluation will be in store after the season is over.

“I think it’s really going to start with evaluation; a great evaluation from top to bottom of everything that we’ve done from scheme to recruiting,” Chizik said. “I just think that you have to really look under the hood of the car. We got a car that’s not running very well right now. I think you got to look under the hood of the car and you’ve got to figure out where the problems are under the hood and that’s going to become a very extensive evaluation starting with a lot of different areas.

“I think that from there you can make very informed decisions on where you need to go with the next season and starting in January.”

But, as he has all season, Chizik avoided questions about whether he believes he’ll still be at Auburn next season and serve as the metaphoric mechanic for the broken down car. He repeated what has become his mantra: “it’s not about me.”
