Three-star athlete Davis commits to Tigers, will play wide receiver

AUBURN — In a busy Sunday of official visits, Auburn added another commitment to its growing recruiting class. Three-star athlete Marcus Davis became the 19th commitment to Auburn, announcing his decision Sunday afternoon.

“I’m committed to Auburn,” Davis said. “I’m done with recruiting. Everything is done. I’m glad it’s over with I’m 100 percent committed.”

The 5-10 165-pound Davis (Delray Beach, Fla.) played cornerback at American Heritage Boca/Delray but will play slot receiver. He spoke with coach Gus Malzahn, offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee and wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig.

“It is pretty exciting. I like the ball in my hands and I think I’d be able to make plays in the offense,” Davis said. “Getting the ball in space, making plays. We talked about that too so I’ll have the opportunity to be able to do all that.”

Davis said he got along very well with Craig, who has already helped add Orlando Evans wide receivers Tony Stevens and Dominic Walker in the past week. Auburn has four or five recruits at wide receiver depending on what position McGill Toolen’s Jason Smith plays.

“The first time I met him he came off as a cool dude,” he said of Craig. “It seemed like I knew him forever.

“I feel like they’ll give me the opportunity I’ve been waiting for and I’m ready to come in and work.”

Davis, who planned to visit Arkansas next week said those plans are now doubtful.

“I was going to take a visit up there next week,” he said. “But I don’t think I’m going anymore.”
