VanGorder to be linebackers coach for New York Jets

One of Brian VanGorder’s last interviews at Auburn came on Nov. 17.

AUBURN — About two months after his firing, former Auburn defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder has been hired to be the linebackers coach for the New York Jets, the club announced Tuesday.

VanGorder, who is under contract for $850,000 annually at Auburn through June 2014, led a unit which ranked 79th nationally in total defense, last in the SEC against the run and tied for last nationally with two interceptions last season. Terms of his deal with the Jets were not released, though anything he earns will offset against what Auburn owes him.

The Tigers allowed a school record 671 yards in their 63-21 loss to Texas A&M – the most points allowed since 1917.

According to the New York Daily News, the Jets are set to release veteran linebackers Bart Scott and Calvin Pace to save salary cap space, so VanGorder will inherit a unit which is being reshaped.

VanGorder, who served as the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator from 2008-11, had previously interviewed for the Carolina Panthers linebackers job. He refused to speak to reporters while attending Senior Bowl practice in Mobile two weeks ago.

The only remaining member of Gene Chizik’s staff yet to find a new job is Trooper Taylor. Chizik has also yet to find a new job.
