Roundup: First ’14 football commitment, Alverson has career performance, baseball and softball win, tennis teams split

AUBURN — Gus Malzahn received his first commitment to the 2014 recruiting class on Sunday from Prattville running back Kamryn Pettway.

Inside the Auburn Tigers was the first to report Pettway, rated a four-star tailback by 247Sport Composite, had flipped his commitment from Florida State to the Tigers.

Pettway rushed for 1,126 yards and 12 touchdowns on 115 carries and added six receptions for 98 yards and two touchdowns in his junior season.

Alverson has career performance on Senior Day

Senior guard Blanche Alverson scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Tigers to a 74-65 win over Mississippi State Sunday afternoon. Auburn clinches the No. 11 seed in the SEC Tournament and will play LSU at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Gwinnet Center.

Alverson went 5-for-9 from three-point range and made her 200th career three-pointer, joining Alli Smalley as the only Auburn women’s basketball players to accomplish the feat.

McCord earns first career win as Tigers take series

Sophomore Rocky McCord struck out a career-best six in a career-long six innings as Auburn defeated Eastern Illinois 8-2 at Plainsman Park Sunday afternoon to earn a 2-1 series win.

Jordan Ebert went 2-for-4 with two runs scored to extend his hitting streak to nine games for Auburn (7-3) which takes on Alabama on Tuesday in Montgomery in the fifth annual Capital City Classic at Riverwalk Stadium.

Davis pitches five-inning shutout

Lexi Davis tossed a three-hit five-inning shutout as Auburn defeated Southern 14-0. The Tigers improved to 16-5 after winning four of five games in the weekend’s War Eagle Classic.

Tennis teams split with Ole Miss

Auburn women’s tennis earned a 4-3 win at Ole Miss. The Tigers improved to 12-1 with their program-record 12th straight win.

Auburn’s men’s team lost to Ole Miss 4-3 and fell to 8-4 overall and 0-2 in SEC play.

Equestrian closes out regular season with win

The second-ranked Auburn equestrian team closed out the regular season with a 9-8 win over No. 8 TCU Sunday. The Tigers improved to 10-2 (4-2 SEC).
